Why I’m Taking a Break from Social Media (And What It’s Already Taught Me)

I’ve made a decision that feels both simple… and surprisingly uncomfortable.

I’ve stepped away from social media.

Not forever.

Not dramatically.

Just… intentionally.

And if I’m honest, I didn’t fully realise how much I needed it until I did it.

When “Inspiration” Becomes Noise

As a coach, I found myself spending more and more time on social media — telling myself I was there for ideas, for inspiration, for growth.

Watching others in the lifestyle and coaching space.

Seeing what’s working.

Learning how to “attract” the right people.

Because that’s what we’re told, right?

Be visible.

Stay relevant.

Keep up.

Do more.

But somewhere along the way, something shifted.

Instead of feeling inspired… I started to feel scattered.

My mind became full of:

  • “Ooh, I should try that…”

  • “That sounds good, how can I use that?”

  • “Am I doing enough?”

  • “How can I grow faster?”

And before I knew it, I wasn’t creating from clarity anymore…I was reacting.

The Constant Mental Juggle

What I’ve realised is this:

When you’re constantly consuming what everyone else is doing, you start to question what you are doing.

Even when you know your work is powerful.

Even when you know your expertise.

I found myself jumping from one idea to the next…trying to do the “next best thing”…

Without fully committing to what I already do so well.

And that created noise.

Not just in my business…but in my mind.

But Isn’t That What We’re Supposed to Do?

“But isn’t that part of growing a business?”

Yes… to a point.

There’s nothing wrong with evolving, learning, or moving forward.

But there’s a difference between:

  • Aligned growth

  • Constant comparison and pressure

And for me, it started to feel like pressure.

Pressure to show up.

Pressure to be seen.

Pressure to keep up.

And if I’m really honest…

It began to go against everything I stand for.

Coming Back to Myself

I’ve built businesses before, long before the noise of social media.

And what worked then?

Connection.

Authenticity.

Consistency.

Not constant comparison.

Not trying to be everything.

Just being me.

And somewhere along the way, I realised I’d drifted slightly from that.

The Experiment

So I decided to run a little experiment:

Step away.

Log off.

Create space.

And see what actually happens.

What I’ve Noticed in just a few days

Honestly… the shift has been almost immediate.

My head feels clearer.

And here’s what that’s looked like:

  • I’ve spent more time reading

  • More time walking

  • More time just thinking

  • More time doing things I’d usually avoid (yes… even housework)

And as simple as that sounds, it matters.

Because when your environment is clear, your mind often follows.

There’s real science behind that.

But more than anything…

I’ve had space.

Space to hear my own thoughts again.

Space to act on ideas without outside influence.

Space to just… be.

The Nervous System

What I didn’t fully realise before is how much social media was stimulating my nervous system.

Constant input.

Constant comparison.

Constant noise.

And since stepping away?

I feel calmer.

More present.

More grounded.

Which is quite ironic… considering this is exactly what I teach.

It Might Not Be Social Media for You

I also know some people might read this and think:

“This sounds easy… why is this even a thing?”

And that’s okay.

We’re all wired differently.

For some, social media might not feel overwhelming at all.

It might even feel inspiring, supportive, or necessary.

But we all have something that can quietly take up space in the mind.

It might be:

  • Constantly checking emails

  • Overworking or always being “on”

  • Saying yes to everything and everyone

  • Overthinking decisions

  • Filling every spare moment with noise — podcasts, TV, distractions

Things that don’t necessarily feel harmful…but might be taking up more mental space than we realise.

And equally…

Some of those things might actually be exactly what you need right now.

I’m not here to tell you what’s healthy or unhealthy.

Or how much time is “too much” or “not enough.”

This is simply a reflection on how I feel…and what this has done for me.

And if it resonates with you, then maybe there’s something in that.

A Gentle Invitation

If you’re reading this and something feels familiar…

Maybe ask yourself:

What could I step away from… even briefly… just to see how it feels?

It doesn’t have to be social media.

It could be anything that feels a little noisy.

Not forever.

Not perfectly.

Just… a pause.

Because sometimes…

Stepping away and looking within is the very thing that shows us what’s actually supporting us, and what isn’t.

So… What Happens Next?

I’m going to continue this for as long as i fell necessary and see what unfolds.

No pressure.

No rigid rules.

Just awareness.

Because I’m not against social media — it’s an incredible tool.

But I am for using it in a way that supports your life…not overwhelms it.

Staying Connected

I’m still very much here.

You can reach me via:

  • WhatsApp (love a good voice note)

  • Email

  • Calls (can't beat a good chat)

And truthfully?

Not knowing everyone’s every move online won’t hurt me.

In fact… it might just help me hear my own a little more clearly.

Final Thought

This isn’t about disconnecting from the world.

It’s about reconnecting with yourself.

And sometimes…

That starts by simply switching off.
